From the Editor
Boy, things sure can snowball. First, I was sick. Then, vacation in Britain. Next thing I knew work got extremely busy, and then the holidays were here. At no point did I plan to be three months late with this first issue, yet here we are discussing how it happened.
But, regardless of how we got here, the key point is that the New Year gave me renewed vigor and a fresh desire to get this project moving again. I'm looking to publish every six to eight weeks from here on out, with perhaps a shorter turnaround than that on the second issue (I’ve held back some good works to give us a head start on filling that second issue). I've also recruited some additional staff to help inject some enthusiasm, energy and elbow grease into the editorial board: this endeavor wound up being more work than any of us expected. Of course, that's unquestionably a good thing—we received far more submissions than I ever could have hoped.
Speaking of those submissions, I think we’ve assembled a first issue with more range and quality than was ever in anybody’s wildest dreams. I don’t want to pick any favorites—so you’ll just have to enjoy each of the offerings in the issue.
I want to take this moment to recognize the entire editorial staff: all unpaid volunteers, all putting in a lot of time to make this site a reality. Some compromises from our original goals had to be made (at one point, I’d envisioned a new design for each issue), but thanks to everybody’s hard work we made it.
As to the future, you are of course invited to submit your work as previously. I’ve got a couple of side projects that will be integrated with the magazine coming up. First among them, I’ve selected a handful of promising submissions from young contributors. You won’t find them in this issue, but we’re working with the creators to develop their style and their work. Look for the results in a future issue.
In addition to that, I’m also announcing a new project I call “29 Frames for 29 Days.” In short, the idea is to take 29 (or more) pictures every day in the month of February. At the end of the month, go back and review your work and put together a photo essay. Some may be published here, all will be hosted on a site designed for the project. I’ve put together a webpage for the project, providing more detail.
Thanks for your patience. I hope the wait was worth it.
